The Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner offers you some useful graphics-editing software such as Adobe Photoshop Elements and ABBY Fine Reader for OCR. The plastic holder is a little flimsy, and for your information if you have limited space, this machine doesn’t have a small footprint. But overall, you will satisfy with what you pay because it is very good at scanning photos and negatives.

Guide Review – Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner

Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner offers an optional automatic document feeder, a 6400 dpi optical resolution, a 35mm film holder for four slides ( or 2 negative strips ), and a medium-format film holder for larger film. This scanner can help you get rid of your box of old photos and photo negatives that you have kept for years. If you have photo negatives, what you need to do is just to put them into the negative holder to load it into the scanner. Then press the start button. You may find the plastic holder is quite flimsy but it is not difficult to put the negatives in the right position (I mean, the center of the scanner). There are 3 modes: Auto, Professional and Home. You should choose the second; else, you might receive some error messages with Auto Mode.

You may satisfy with the dust and scratches removing feature offered by Digital ICE technology. That feature, together with the color restoration feature, can help you have your negatives and photos scanned nicely. You may also satisfy with the included Adobe Photoshop Elements and may spend a lot of your time restoring your old photos. ABBY Fine Reader which can recognize optical characters is also included in the software package. Moreover, you can scan, copy, email or send to PDF just with one button. An USB 2.0 cable is also included.

It won’t take too long for most resolutions, even if you use Digital ICE which requires multiple passes. Users who are professional photographers may have to wait a few minutes for higher resolution, over 2400 dpi for example.

However, there are some feedbacks about something happening to the coils and it may starts grinding after a period of time. So, you should buy a contract when purchasing because this machine may not last as long as you expect. Another drawback is that although having the size of a multifunctional scanner (about 18” long and 11 wide), Epson Perfection V500 Photo can only scan images up to 8.5×11. Moreover, you may need to use Photoshop Elements to stitch two scans together because this machine does not offer you built-in stitching tool. Last thing, more paper instructions would make this machine become a more perfect and functional office tool.
